Language and listening comprehension are essential building blocks for reading success. With this in mind, Breton Downs first grade teachers, Rhonda Young, Becky Kramer, and Colbie Lee applied for a grant to bring listening centers and engaging books into their classrooms.
“It’s crucial that young children have opportunities to listen to stories with rich vocabulary and that model fluent reading,” the team shared. “In our classrooms, we engage in one to two read-alouds each day, along with shared reading experiences. A listening center would be an exceptional addition to support and extend this learning.”
Thanks to the generous support of the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation, up to 75 first graders each year will benefit from this exciting enhancement—strengthening listening skills, growing vocabulary, and fostering a lifelong love of reading. Thank you for investing in our learners!
