A Virtual Cup of Coffee with Henry VanderZyden '20

You can only have one: Rose’s caramel corn, an ice cream cone from Jersey Junction, or a Yesterdog. Which do you choose?
Jersey Junction.

What are your plans after graduation?
Going to Michigan State University to study international relations, and then hopefully go to law school.

What have you learned in East that will enable you to be successful?
That excellence takes work and effort, and that if you want something, you will need to work for it.

What were you like in school?
I was pretty outgoing and social during my afternoon classes, but quiet in my morning classes because I was still waking up.

Did you have a favorite teacher or class?
I really enjoyed both Mr Stabile’s and Ms. Mapes’ class this year.

If you had to choose one moment in one location to serve as the signature moment of your East school experience, what would it be?
Getting a steak dinner from Coach Mehney after beating Christian in football freshmen year.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?
That while grades are important, they don’t mean everything. Also, not to take my time in East for granted because it can end in a blink of an eye.

Who from East do you think you’ll stay in touch with in the future?
My close group of friends

What advice do you have for young East kids?
To soak everything in and to enjoy being a Pioneer.

Bonus question: What are you glad we didn’t ask you about?
Least favorite teacher.
