MISSION

The East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation enriches the educational experience of our students by funding excellence in teaching and learning that requires financial support beyond the district.

GRANT TYPES

Mini-Grants (up to $1,500) – The Foundation awards Mini-Grants for programs and enhancements that promote excellence in teaching and learning. Examples: materials or equipment for projects or programs, or payment for learning experiences for students and staff, including guest speakers or experiences. (See VandenBerg Scholarship or Superintendent’s Mini-Grant for staff learning opportunities as well). Mini-grant applications are accepted throughout the school year until May 1 and will be reviewed as our board schedule permits.

Foundation Grants (Over $1,500) – Grants for the enhancement of instruction on a larger scale. Examples: include seed money for new programs, upgrading program materials, or learning experiences for students and staff. Please see the EGRSF website for a list of previously funded grant requests. Applications are accepted throughout the year and will be reviewed in August and January of each school year unless considered time sensitive.

GRANT REQUEST PROCESS

Grant Application

An application must be completed along with a detailed description of the item, program or project to be funded, an itemized budget including all costs associated and other sources of funding if applicable, and goals and expected outcomes as indicated on the application. Applications must be approved by the building administrator before being submitted to the Foundation office. Applications will then be reviewed by the Superintendent and the EGRSF Grants Committee and presented to the Foundation Board for action. Applicants will receive notification regarding grant status from the Foundation office within two weeks of the grants board meeting in August or January. (Mini-grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis and the review process may be abbreviated.)

The following criteria will be used to rate the grant application:

  1. Is the grant request student oriented?

  2. How does it relate to the curriculum?

  3. Is the application thorough and well written with specific examples of how the program or equipment will be used or implemented in the classroom?

  4. Does it include an itemized budget noting any additional funding?

  5. If funds are needed to sustain this program on an annual basis, does the grant request include a schedule and identified sources for future funding?

  6. How does it enhance teaching and learning in the district?

Applicants requesting technology items must also submit the supplemental technology application. See below for the link.

Evaluation

Within ninety days of receiving the grant funds, a written evaluation must be submitted to the Foundation.  The Foundation may request periodic reports on grant implementation.  Other forms of evaluation or summary may also be requested.

 

Grant Highlight: Foundation Grant and John Nowak '11 Bring Mindful Moments in Music to Special Education Classes

Many afternoons last fall, an enthusiastic group of East Grand Rapids High School special education students could be found marching, singing, smiling, and tapping their drumsticks to the beat at Cardio Drumming, a unique after-school activity funded by a grant from the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation.

The grant supports both the high-energy, after-school Cardio Drumming Club and the more mellow, in-class Mindful Moments music programming for MOCI (Moderate Cognitive Impairment) students. Both weekly programs are led by musician John Nowak, EGR '11, and both harness the power of music to enhance social-emotional learning, fine motor control, spatial awareness, and focus.

Plus, as you'll see from watching this video, it's just plain fun.
