A Virtual Cup of Coffee with Jake Westerbeke '20

You can only have one: Rose’s caramel corn, an ice cream cone from Jersey Junction, or a Yesterdog. Which do you choose?
No doubt, an ice cream cone from Jersey.

What are your plans after graduation?
I will be studying Music Performance at the School of Music, Theater and Dance at the University of Michigan.

What have you learned in East that will enable you to be successful?
I've learned to not judge people without getting to know them first. I think it's important to realize that we all come from a different background. I also have learned that it is a good thing to have a lot of different interests.

What were you like in school?
It depended on the class, subject, and teacher but sometimes I was quiet and other times I would try to be at the center of attention.

Did you have a favorite teacher or class?
I really couldn't pick between the two but Mr. Arthur (IB Physics) and Mr. Farmer (IB Math) are my two favorite teachers. I would also put Mrs. Hazle (IB English) up there.

If you had to choose one moment in one location to serve as the signature moment of your East school experience, what would it be?
I'm not sure I could pick a single moment.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?
Don't get so caught up in little things. Look at the bigger picture and ask yourself: Will this really affect me as much as I think it will now?

Who from East do you think you’ll stay in touch with in the future?
Some of my friends and favorite teachers.

What advice do you have for young East kids?
Find what drives you.

Bonus question: What are you glad we didn’t ask you about?
Nothing, I came prepared.
