A Virtual Cup of Coffee with Oliver Shapton '20

You can only have one: Rose’s caramel corn, an ice cream cone from Jersey Junction, or a Yesterdog. Which do you choose?
Raspberry sorbet ice cream from Jersey Junction! It was always my favorite plus I couldn't eat real ice cream.

What are your plans after graduation?
Attending University of Michigan!

What have you learned in East that will enable you to be successful?
I have learned to always focus on the good rather than the bad and to work hard and surround myself with people that will help me be a better person!

What were you like in school?
I was often quiet in situations that I didn't feel comfortable in but once I got to know people I was a lot more energetic and open.

Did you have a favorite teacher or class?
One of my favorite teachers is Mr. Vandenbrink and his history class but I liked a lot of my classes including math with Mr. Dykstra.

If you had to choose one moment in one location to serve as the signature moment of your East school experience, what would it be?
Some of my most memorable experiences at East were with the swim and water polo team. I met a lot of close friends through my years in the program.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?
I wish I knew how fast time goes by and to never take things for granted. Especially with everything that is going on. I would always stress over the littlest things when I wish I looked more at the bigger picture. People should just enjoy each day at a time and not worry so much about the small things!

Who from East do you think you’ll stay in touch with in the future?
I'm sure that I will stay in touch with countless people from my grade. I have made many memories with the people in my class and I plan on staying in touch with my class as we all go our separate ways.

What advice do you have for young East kids?
I would say focus on the bigger picture and don't take things for granted. Everything will work out and don't stress so much about grades and what life will look like so far into the future. Just enjoy high school cause it goes by fast!

Bonus question: What are you glad we didn’t ask you about?
My least favorite class or about standardized testing.
