Sensory Tools and Elementary Student Supports

Stephanie Thelen and Beth Chaps

Our elementary principals recognize that elementary students have a variety of needs that staff strive each day to meet, both academically and socio-emotionally to support the whole child. That’s why Katie McIntosh at Breton Downs, Stephanie Olson at Wealthy, and Stephanie Thelen at Lakeside applied for a grant from the Foundation in the fall of 2023 to provide sensory tools and other supports for their students.

There is a growing need among some students for support sensory tools. In higher frequency since the pandemic, students are coming to school displaying behaviors that need more intervention and the population of students with special needs continues to increase. The sensory tools provide intervention and support for students demonstrating challenges with anxiety, depression, inattention, lack of focus, hyperactivity, and more.

Each school is now equipped with a small school library of research-based sensory support tools that provide items to support a wide range of needs. Now, when students display a need for such an intervention, the schools have these items ready and available to implement.

Thank you, Foundation donors, for making this possible!
