Students Hone their Reading Skills with Foundation-Funded Decodable Books

At our elementary schools, EGRPS is actively increasing the use of decodable books in the general education classroom and in intervention. The decodable books that were funded through a grant from the EGR Schools Foundation in the fall of 2024, are a newly available resource, just released on August 21, 2024.

The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education is the district-approved curriculum used to teach Orton Gillingham phonics to students in Tier 2 and 3 intervention who need extra support with learning how to read. These newest books are in color and are "real books" in contrast to photocopies. Each phonics concept has a fiction and nonfiction book.

"Decodable books give students confidence in trusting the letters to sound out words," said Andrea Dudley, a reading interventionist at Breton Downs Elementary.

Dudley also shared comments from two students: "I call myself a smarty pants reader!" said one. Another student said, "I love reading! I can read anything!"

The district has a multi-faceted approach to helping students learn to read. Decodable books are one of the many tools EGRPS staff use.

The Foundation is thrilled to be able to support our students in building and growing fundamentals and reading could not be more fundamental. Thank you for your support in granting these requests.
