Grant Highlight: High School Learning Commons Library Collection Update

Books get old.

Let’s face it. As great as they are, students can only read so many of the classics like The Great Gatsby and Wuthering Heights (or The Notebook) before they need to find something a bit more contemporary. And don’t get us started on Johnny Tremain.

That’s why EGRHS Learning Commons Coordinator Tori Miller applied for a mini-grant from the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation for $1,000 in new books to replenish the library’s stock of in-demand, recent titles.

“The grant helped update our collection of Learning Commons library books by bringing in contemporary pieces,” Miller says. “Reading is not only about annotating the classics; it’s also about finding stories that resonate with the soul, which is crucial for social-emotional development in young adults. Providing newer titles allows students to engage their interests and feel represented through relatable fictional characters.”

Thank you, Foundation donors, for making these new books available to our students!
