Grant Highlight: March Book Madness

March Book Madness continues to be one of the most beloved classroom enhancement grants supported by the Foundation. Since 2017, this engaging program has invited elementary students to cheer on their favorite books in a bracket-style competition, much like a spirited NCAA tournament.

March Book Madness is a fan favorite in our elementary schools—and it’s easy to see why! Thanks to the Foundation’s support since 2017, students have been diving into books and cheering them on as they make their way through the brackets, just like March Madness basketball.

Elementary Learning Commons Coordinator Sarah Webber continued with the “Wall of Fame” to celebrate our 4th and 5th grade top readers. The result? A surge of enthusiasm!  Even students who do not usually gravitate toward books jumped in, discovering new favorites, exploring new genres and asking for more.  Students reading eight or more books from our chapter book bracket not only get their picture up on the school’s Wall of Fame but their pictures are showcased at the KDL East Grand Rapids branch to celebrate their accomplishment.

From kindergarten through fifth grade, you can feel the buzz. Students checking brackets, debating favorites, and celebrating books together. March Book Madness isn’t just a competition, it’s a celebration of reading, and the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation continues to make the magic happen!
