Grant Highlight: HS Rock Climbing Club

Let’s say you’re an athlete. You’re strong. You’re agile. But you’re not driven by trying to outdo your opponent; you want to be better than yourself.

What do you do? You could climb a rock.

Last fall, EGRHS teacher Parker Hutchinson recognized that there are students who fit exactly that profile. She applied for a grant along with students Morgan Schiefler and Lauren Haskell to create a high school rock climbing club. “The goal of the Rock Climbing Club is to help students build confidence, resilience, and physical fitness, while also developing their social and emotional skills,” their application reads. “Through climbing, students learn how to face challenges, manage frustration, and celebrate personal growth. These lessonsa carry over into the classroom by improving focus, persistence, and collaboration. The club also provides a space for students who may not be involved in traditional team sports to connect with peers and find a sense of belonging.”

The Foundation-funded grant helped students afford to attend safe rock-climbing experiences at Planet Rock in Grand Rapids.

From the very beginning, the club was a big success. "The rock climbing club has benefited all the students by providing a non-competitive sports environment," says Haskell. "It allows kids to have a sense of community. It is an uplifting midweek experience that allows students to have fun with their peers in an active environment. "

This winter, the Foundation received a thank you note from the club. “On behalf of the EGRHS Rock Climbing Club, we wanted to let you know we are so grateful for your grant money!” wrote Schiefler & Haskell. “We have had amazing success these past few months. We are up to 18 members (and counting!), and it has been incredible to have our climbing passes covered! Thanks again!”

Thank you, Foundation donors, for making this opportunity possible for our students!
